UV Wins Opening Game of United Soccer Conference Tourney
Nov. 2, 2006 Washington D.C.- The Utah Valley State soccer team picked up a 2-1 win over Delaware State on Thursday in the opening round of the United Soccer Conference tournament. The win ups the Wolverines record to 7-10-1. The Wolverines trailed 1-0 at halftime after Delaware State scored a goal in the 33rd minute. "We weren't satisfied with how we played in the first half," Utah Valley State coach Brent Anderson said. In the second half Utah Valley came out and scored two quick goals to take the lead for good at 2-1. Chelsea Stone tied the game at one when she scored from 12 yards out on a pass from Rebecca Petersen in the 55th minute. Four minutes later Courtney Robbins netted her eighth goal of the season when she scored the go-ahead goal from the middle of the 18 on a pass from Jenni Wright. "I was really pleased the girls came out quickly in the second half and scored," Anderson said. "After we scored we got another one right away and did not let them counter attack." Utah Valley out shot Delaware State 18-5 for the game and had 12 shots on goal to the opponents three. "Today was a good team effort," Anderson said. "We responded well after going down a goal." Anderson said he was the pleased with the play of Petersen in the midfield, Natalee Davis and Alyssa Woodbury on defensive side. Utah Valley State plays South Dakota State on Friday in the semi-finals of the United Soccer Conference tournament. South Dakota State beat the Wolverines 1-0 in Orem on Oct. 20. "We get a second opportunity to play them and you don't get that very often," Anderson said. "It is time to take what we learned from the last game and improve on that." |
