UV Wins Big at Home
Oct. 19, 2007
OREM, Utah - Shantae Adams and Athena Bradshaw led four different Wolverines that found the net as Utah Valley got a huge 5-0 victory over NJIT at Wolverine Field, Friday afternoon. With the win, the Wolverines improve to (3-11-1) overall and (3-1) in United Soccer Conference play, nearly assuring themselves of a top-two seed in the upcoming USC Tournament. "Our defense played very well today," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "We had better defensive organization allowed our midfielders to get in better attacking position. We played with a lot of determination today, especially Athena in scoring our first goal and setting up the next two. Shantae also had a great game, showing determination to get into the box, giving herself scoring opportunities." The Wolverines started off the match on a high note in the 16th minute as Athena Bradshaw sprinted ahead of the pack and collected a nice feed to perfection from her teammate Andi Bagdan for an early goal. Bradshaw was able to juke her way past the Highlanders goalkeeper as she booted the ball into the top left corner of the net for the early 1-0 lead for UV. It was a close match at the half with the Wolverines leading the Highlanders 1-0 but things would soon change as UV came out in the second half and scored early and often to finish the 5-0 rout. The second half picked right off where it left off for the Wolverines as the offensive took charge of the contest. UV's Taryn Smith took a feed in the middle of the field 20 yards out and skied the ball over the head of the Highlanders goalkeeper for a beautiful goal. It was Smith's first goal of the season and it. Adrienne Schneider put UV up 3-0 on a rebound off of a Chelsey Ellison shot that deflected right into Schneider and she was able to bump the ball off of her hip into the net. In the 78th minute of play Hailey Brown fed her running mate Shantae Adams nicely as she broke ahead of the Highlander defense for an easy goal. Adams wasn't satisfied with only one goal as she was able to score her second goal of the match in the final minutes of the contest to finish with two goals on the afternoon. This helped propel the Wolverines to a 5-0 victory over NJIT. "It was a good team effort today," Adams said. "Our defense got the ball to the front and I was able to put the ball in the net a few times." NJIT put up a fight and competed until the final whistle but UV was too much as they handed the Highlanders another loss as they fall to (0-13) on the season. NJIT had some good shots in the contest but the Wolverines had a stellar defensive effort and great goalkeeper play from the Wolverines Mallory Schott as she kept the Highlanders scoreless in the match. UV continues its home stand against United Soccer Conference foe Delaware State tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. Next week, Wolverines travel to Cedar City to take on Southern Utah Saturday, October 27th at 2 p.m. This was a good team effort that gives us confidence," Anderson said. "It was great to get a win today, but we need to follow it up with a strong performance tomorrow." |
