Despite Strong Match, UV Falls to Longwood
Sept. 28, 2007
FARMVILLE, Va. - Despite playing one of its best game of the season, Utah Valley fell to Longwood, 2-1, after the Lancers scored a go-ahead goal in the 84th minute. "Even though our girls were disappointed with the loss, I think this game is a confidence-builder," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "The girls played well. Our attack was the best its been all season and we possessed the ball well." Anderson was especially pleased with the play of goalkeeper Mallory Schott and midfielders Andi Bagdan, Danielle Anderson, Taryn Smith, Lauren Tuerpe and Kelly Vide. "Our midfielders played exceptionally well," Anderson said. "They helped us possess the ball and kept the pressure on." Schott had a season-high 13 saves for the Wolverines. The Lancers got on the board first in the first half when Michelle DeSieno got past the Wolverine defenders on a through ball and found the bottom-left corner of the net. UV answered in the 34th minute when Vide found a loose ball in the box and found the goal for the first time this season and her first collegiate goal. The game remained tied until the halftime break. The Wolverines were credited with seven shots in the first half compared to Longwood's credited nine. "We seemed to be possessing the ball very well throughout the game," Anderson said. "I was surprised to see that they out-shot us." The game remained tied at a goal apiece until the 84th minute when Longwood's Brittany Stubbs found the goal after the ball hit the post on a corner kick. The Wolverines will finish their road trip when they play South Carolina State Sunday at Longwood. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. (MT) |
