Clough Breaks School Record in UV Victory

Sept. 26, 2007

Box Score

WASHINGTON D.C. - On a day when an individual record was set, a team effort ruled as four different Utah Valley players scored goals on the Wolverines' way to a 5-1 victory over Howard. The five goals are the most scored by a UV team since the 2006 squad beat NJIT 6-0 on Sept. 1 last year.

"It's good to get our first win," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "I think we still could have played a cleaner match."

UV's (1-5-1, 1-0 United Soccer Conference) Jenni Clough found the net in the 66th minute for her second goal of the season and 14th goal of her career. Clough's 14 goals break the school record for career goals previously held by Carolyn Theurer. Three minutes later Clough scored her second of the game.

"Jenni has taken on a lot of responsibilities this year as our primary leader," Anderson said. "It is fitting that the record-breaking goal helped us win a game. I am happy for her."

Along with Clough, three other Wolverines scored goals on the day.

"One of our goals coming in was to get our players forward in the attack," Anderson said. "With four different players scoring, I think that we were successful doing that."

UV started the scoring 30 minutes into the first half when Katey Turner got free on the left side where Taryn Smith found her. Turner beat Howard's keeper to put the Wolverines ahead, 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until halftime. The Wolverines held a 7-5 shot advantage in the opening stanza and fired three shots on goal in the half.

Howard struck back in the second half when Aliyah Glenn got free down the left side for a goal to tie the match at 1-1.

It was all Wolverines after that, as Clough scored her two goals in the 66th and 69th minutes off assists from Lauren Bluth and Andi Bagdan.

Utah Valley added to the lead in the 71st minute when Bluth scored her first career goal off an assist from Nicole Archibald. Lauren Tuerpe also scored her first career goal off an assist from Smith in the 77th minute.

The Wolverines will now travel to Farmville, Va. For a Friday evening match at Longwood. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. (Eastern). The road trip will conclude when UV faces off with South Carolina State in Farmville Sunday at 11 a.m.

"Longwood will present different challenges for us," Anderson said. "We look forward to matching up against them."
