Utah Valley State Falls to Gonzaga 2-1
Sept. 17, 2006 Spokane, WA- The Utah Valley State soccer team lost 2-1 to Gonzaga on Sunday. The loss drops the Wolverines record to 3-4-1 while Gonzaga improved to 4-3-1. Gonzaga's Jamie Blanche put the Bulldogs on the board early when she posted her first goal of the season in the 21st minute. Gonzaga led 1-0 at halftime UV tied the game at 1-1 six minutes into the second half when freshman Natalie Hatfield took a cross from Rebecca Petersen before blasting the ball into the back corner of the net. Gonzaga's Cristin Leverson netted the game-winning goal in the 64th minute on a shot from 10-yards out when she caught Wolverine keeper Kelley Thompson out of the net. Utah Valley was out shot 12-6 by Gonzaga. The Wolverine reserves tallied five of the attempts. Despite the loss, Wolverine coach Brent Anderson was pleased with the overall performance of his team. "It was a good game," he said. "I was pleased with the way we played and it was good to see some of our freshman play well. I thought we played them fairly well in the first half. We remained calm to start the second half but after the first ten minutes Gonzaga took control of the game." The Wolverines return home for its second home game of the season on Thursday at 4 p.m. when they play UTEP. |
