Freshman Pair Net Goals in Heartbreaker
Sept. 14, 2007
LARAMIE, Wyo. - Two Utah Valley freshman netted their first respective goals but it wasn't enough as the Wolverines fell to Wyoming, 3-2, after a late goal by the Cowgirls. Freshmen Sara Walker and Katey Turner each netted their first collegiate goals as UV (0-3-1) fought back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits. "I think we showed that we are a resilient group," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "I feel this team is coming together and I think they are beginning to see their potential." Wyoming started the scoring early when the Cowgirls' Emily Layton scored on a free kick from 30 yards out just 3:26 into the game. The Wolverines fought back. Just two minutes after she entered the game, Walker tied the game at 1-1 when she found the net on a header in the 33rd minute. Jenni Clough, who dished out a nice cross, and Brooke Salcido picked up assists for UV on the play. The teams battled back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half with neither scoring before the break. Like the first half, Wyoming struck early in the second. The Cowgirls took a 2-1 lead on a goal by Amanda Lathrop. UV wasted no time fighting back. Just over five minutes following the Wyoming goal, the Wolverines scored when Turner found a loose ball and netted it from the angle. "I was encouraged to see two freshmen score goals today," Anderson said. The decisive goal was scored in the 80th minute when Lathrop scored her second goal of the day when she picked up an attempted pass from goalkeeper Mallory Schott and found the net. The Wolverines continue their road trip when they head to Greeley to take on Northern Colorado Sunday. Kickoff is set for noon. |
