Wolverines Tie Dixie State 1-1
Sept. 9, 2006 OREM, UT- Mother nature wasn't kind to the Wolverine soccer team on Saturday. With the score tied at one with eight minutes left in the game, officials called Utah Valley's home opener with Dixie State due to lightening and heavy rain fall. The tie now gives Utah Valley a 2-3-1 record while Dixie fell to 4-1-1. Dixie is in its first year as an NCAA Division II program. The Wolverines controlled possession of the game the entire afternoon as they out shot the Rebels 16-3. "We had our opportunities," Utah Valley State coach Brent Anderson said. "We shouldn't have given up that goal in the first half. I was pleased with the way we played in the second half. We had a lot of opportunities. We just couldn't get one in." Both teams scored its goals in the first half. Dixie took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Cami Drecksel scored off a pass from Stari Dias atop the 18. The Wolverines tied the game at one when Brittany Call took a ball from Capri Stevens and booted it in from just inside the box in the 31st minute. "Capri served me a great ball and I was able to put right over the keeper," Call said. In the second half, Utah Valley had several shot attempts that would have given them the lead. A big miss for the Wolverines came in the 53rd minute when Jenni Wright missed a penalty kick after a hand ball was called on Dixie. "I have a ton of confidence in Jenni," Anderson said. "Once she scores that first goal she will get going just fine." Utah Valley State returns to action next Friday when they play at Idaho. |
