Season-Opening Tie for Wolverines

Aug. 31, 2007

Box Score

OREM, Utah -Jenni Clough tied the Utah Valley school record for career goals (13) when she scored in the 63rd minute as the Wolverines ran to a 1-1 season-opening tie with Southern Utah.

The draw was the first in four games between the two schools as UV now enjoys a 3-0-1 record against SUU. The Wolverines, now 0-0-1, started the season with a tie for the first time since 2004 (Northern Arizona, 0-0).

"We have worked very hard on our organization and fitness," head coach Brent Anderson said. "I saw improvement in both of those areas today, so I am encouraged."

The game was physical throughout, as both teams committed over 20 fouls. Four yellow cards and one red card were issued in the game.

Utah Valley jumped out to control the ball in the early going, getting two quick shots, one by Katey Turner that flew just over the net and another on goal by Adrienne Schneider that was saved.

SUU came back to control the ball during the middle of the first half. The Thunderbirds out shot UV, 6-2 in the opening stanza. Most of SUU shots came during the middle portion of the half.

In the second half, UV came out with energy and generated several scoring opportunities. After the Wolverines forced a corner kick, Shantae Adams served a ball that was deflected by the SUU goalkeeper to Clough, who freed herself from 15 yards out and drove a laser into the right corner of the net.

"Jenni (Clough) is our leader on and off the field," Anderson said. "She's a hard worker and leads by example."

UVU kept the pressure on moments later with Adams serving a shot that was saved and Athena Bradshaw having a shot sail high on a cross.

SUU fought back, applying pressure over the final 20 minutes. In the 76th minute the T-Birds Ashley Westphal found Laura Goodrich alone in the box to score the game-tying goal.

UVU had opportunities late, the best coming when Turner got free inside the box and was bumped just before she could get a shot off.

The Wolverines return to action Sept. 8 when they head to New Mexico to take on the Lobos and Long Island on consecutive days.
