UV Leads Early but Falls at ISU
Aug. 24, 2007
"We did what we needed to do early on," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "We put the pressure on and got an early goal. Unfortunately, our fitness level became an issue at times."
Utah Valley jumped out to a quick lead when junior Shantae Adams found sophomore Adrienne Schneider alone in the box. Schneider headed the ball into the back of the net to put the Wolverines ahead, 1-0, just 7:44 into the first half.
Idaho State kept the pressure on throughout the first half, out-shooting UV 14-2 in the period. Even though the Bengals had several shots on goal, Wolverine goalkeeper Mallory Schott helped UV maintain its first-half lead by recording six saves.
"Idaho State pressured us the entire game," Anderson said. "The last 15 minutes of the first half were intense. Mallory did a great job in goal again."
In the second half, Idaho State kept the pressure on, again getting 14 shots off compared to UV's six. The Wolverines got four shots on goal in the second half.
UV was able to maintain its lead until the 65th minute when Jenny Ford got free for the Bengals to tie the game at 1-1. Eight minutes later, ISU took the lead on a Jana Boehler goal. The Bengals final goal came late (89th minute).
Along with the assist, Adams added two shots, with one on goal. UV's Katey Turner led the Wolverines with four shots, two on goal.
"It was good to see the individual skills on our team in spurts today," Anderson said. "Now we need to put the individual play together for a good, consistent team effort."
Utah Valley has a week to prepare for its official season opener. The Wolverines welcome Southern Utah on Friday, Aug. 31. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m.
