van Vuuren Named Independent Golfer of the Year

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State junior golfer, Nic van Vuuren was named the Division I Independent Golfer of the Year and also received First Team All-Independent honors on Tuesday. Wolverine women's golfer Ashley Baldwin was named to the Honorable Mention All-Independent team. The teams were compiled by Division I Independent sports information directors and based on stroke average.

Van Vuuren had the lowest stroke average among all Independent golfers. In 12 events and 33 rounds van Vuuren totaled 2375 strokes, an average of 71.9 strokes per round. He had six top-10 finishes, nine top-20 finishes and won the 2006 NCAA Division I Independent tournament. His best single round of 68 came at the Division I Independent tournament. The Johannesburg, South Africa native will return for his senior year to lead the Wolverines during the 2006-07 golf season.

"He works as hard as anybody," said head men's coach Tommy Johnson about van Vuuren. "He doesn't seek for honors, but he deserves everything he gets. There is just bigger and better for Nic in the future."

Baldwin led the Wolverines during their first year of Division I competition. Baldwin, a sophomore from Idaho Falls, Idaho competed in seven events and 18 rounds totaling 1536 strokes and an 85.3 stroke average per round. She was a top-20 finisher at the NCAA Division I Independent tournament. She shot her best single round of 77 at the Bobcat Desert Classic.

"I'm very proud of Ashley," said head women's coach Denise Larson. "In our first year we needed golfers to lead both on and off the field, and Ashley was a great example of that."
