March 14, 2007
Goodyear, Arizona - The Utah Valley women's golf team reached new heights in the program's young history on Wednesday at the Bobcat Invitational at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona. The Wolverines shot a school record 310 as a team, just a day after setting a record in the second round of the invitational by shooting 317. The 310 team score was good enough for sixth best on the day out of 20 teams competing. Overall Utah Valley finished the three-day event in 15th place out of 20 teams. "It's great for the girls to come away (from a tournament) proud of how they played and of their teammates," said head coach Denise Larson. "I couldn't be happier right now. The girls are excited and can't wait to get back out on the course again. This is definitely something for us to use as confidence in the future and confidence means so much in golf." The Wolverines had all four golfers finish in the 70's, the first time that has happened in the school's infancy. All four set personal records in the tournament with Ashley Baldwin recording her best score in Wednesday's final round by shooting a 75 and finishing in a tie for 46th. Echo Thatcher and Shari Johnson both shot 78 while Kasey Larson shot 79. The scores are both personal records for Thatcher and Larson and Johnson's 77 in Tuesday's second round is her best. Sarah Coop also competed for the Wolverines in the invitational. Thatcher finished in a tie for 53rd while Johnson tied for 64th and Larson tied for 70th. The Wolverines will compete again on April 9-10 at the Northridge Spring Classic and Angeles National Golf Club in Sundland, California. |
