Women's Basketball Hosts Three During Holiday Weekend

Coming Up... The Wolverines are coming off of a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Utah last weekend. Julie McMurray's game winning three-pointer went halfway down before it fell out as the buzzer sounded, giving the Utes to hard-fought victory. It was the first loss in the three games for Utah Valley, who opened the season with wins over Mesa State and Utah State. The win over Utah State was the first win ever over an in-state Division-I school and the first off three games this season against schools from the WAC. New Mexico State on Saturday and then Boise State next Wednesday, the 29th, round out the three WAC schools on the schedule. A Look at the Numbers... Fairbanks is tied for second among all Independent players in scoring, the leader in blocks with 2.33 per game and is tied for 5th in rebounding at 8.0 per game. She also shooting 58.7% (27-for-46) from the floor. Marvin's scoring average is sixth among Independents while Beaman is tied for 20th. Freshman point guard Asumi Nakayama leads Independent players in assists (5.33 apg) and is second with a 4.0 steals per game average. She is second in three-point percentage as well hitting 55.6% (5-for-9) from beyond the arc so far this season. Scouting the Aztecs... The Aztecs opened the season with a six-point loss to Nevada at home, followed by a seven-point home win over UC Davis and then a loss at cross town rival San Diego, 76-46. Utah Valley State and San Diego State have met once before. The Aztecs ran away with an easy 91-45 win during the 2004-05 season. Scouting the Knights... SVU is off to an 0-5 start so far this season, with its most recent loss to Coastal Carolina on Monday. Friday's game will be the first ever meeting between UV and Southern Virginia. Scouting the Aggies... Cecilia Russell-Nava is averaging 16.0 ppg to lead NMSU while Anikia Jawara is averaging 13 per contest. Sherell Neal is averaging a double double of 12.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Wolverines Hope for Fast Start at Home... The Wolverines were 10-6 in Orem in 2005-06 and hope that same success will help them to a fast start. Overall, UV will play 17 of its 28 games at home. Looking Ahead... Following that, the next three games will come against in-state schools beginning with Southern Utah on December 7th. They'll be at Weber State on December 9th before hosting BYU on December 16th. |
