Q&A With Susie Cornejo

March 15, 2007

Why did you choose UVSC?

It was close to home and I like the campus.

When did you start playing basketball?

I was really into soccer growing up. Then my family moved to Aberdeen, Idaho, and they didn't have a soccer program, and my choices were to play basketball and volleyball. I didn't want to play volleyball because I wasn't very good at it, so in seventh grade I chose to play basketball and I've loved it ever since.

Tell about playing basketball in high school?

I played in basketball in a small town. It was nice having the community come out to the games and support you.

What do you like to do when you're at home?

I love to go four-wheeling. My home town (Aberdeen, Idaho) is a country town and I live outside of town so we usually go four-wheeling or we go shoot rabbits in the desert. What can I say? I'm a country girl.

What inspired you to major in secondary education?

I love kids. I love to be surrounded by kids and making a difference in their lives. Hopefully I can help to change their lives in a positive way.

What is your ideal job?

Teaching and coaching. I love teaching.

What's one of the greatest lessons basketball has taught you?

To be disciplined. I've learned to discipline myself. In order to be successful I've learned I have to discipline myself. You need hard work, on the court as well as off the court. I've learned if you mix hard work with dedication, then you will achieve the goals you want and this applies to all aspects of my life, not just basketball.

What's it like playing for Coach Nixon?

It's great. She's a smart coach and I have so much respect for her. I learn more and more from her every year. I like her style of coaching and the way she coaches, she is a very inspiring coach. She believes in her team, no matter what, and it shows.

If you could be remembered for one thing, what would it be? <

I want to be known as a good teammate. I want to be remember as a teammate that can be trusted and known for always being there on and off the court.

Finish these sentences.

I can't live without...my car.

Before every game I....I watch a movie. I like watching chick flicks. Last year, Hollie, Robyn and I, before every game would watch The Notebook. This year I watch all sorts of movies, but I always watch a movie before the game.

In my spare time I like to...make CD mixes.

My favorite all-time movie...I love Chronicles of Narnia and I love Spiderman. I'm a big Spiderman fan. I've seen both of them over 50 times each. It's ridiculous.

My favorite comfort food is...it has to be Mountain Dew.

The band/singer I'm always in the mood for...I love Def Leppard. I love old bands.

My sports hero is...I don't have a specific one. I admire coaches in general. It takes a lot of time and effort, believing in your team. They have a lot of responsibility and it's hard work. I really respect them.

My favorite childhood memory...My little brother. He means the world to me. He's only 7 years old. He was born when I was in 7th grade and he was premature and he weighed 1 lb. 6 oz. He was a miracle baby and I'll never forget that moment when I held him in my palm for the first time.
