Fairbanks Named to Region 7 Team, Finalist for All-America
March 8, 2007 Orem, Utah - Utah Valley sophomore Robyn Fairbanks has been named to the WBCA Region 7 Team and a finalist for the 2007 Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team. Region 7 consists of schools from the Mountain West Conference, Big Sky Conference and Western Athletic Conference along with Utah Valley State College. She's also the only player from an in-state Division I program to be an All-America finalist this season. Fairbanks averaged 23.7 points, currently third in the nation, and 9.1 rebounds per game for Utah Valley, leading the team to a 15-13 season, its best record ever at the NCAA level. She also ranks in the top-20 nationally in field goal percentage, hitting 56% from the field for the Wolverines. "It's great recognition for her and she deserves whatever recognition she gets because she's had a great year," said Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon. "To have a player like Robyn as we are building our program and gradually making a name for ourselves helps speed that process and shows people that we do have great players and a competitive program." The Canadian sophomore was named the Division-I Independent Player of the Week six times this season, including each of the past two weeks. Earlier this season Fairbanks became Utah Valley's first NCAA 1,000 point scorer, reaching the plateau in just 49 career games. Other season highlights include a school record 43 points against Montana State and a 29 points, 20 rebound effort in a win over Boise State. The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in cooperation with Eastman Kodak Company, announced the finalists today for the 2007 Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. The 52 finalists, who are voted upon by WBCA-member coaches in each of the eight WBCA geographical regions, are now in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak/WBCA All-America Team. Five other players joined Fairbanks as finalists from Region 7; Natalie Doma and Andrea Lightfoot (Idaho State), Mandy Morales (Montana), Adrianne Ross (TCU) and Hanna Zavecz (Wyoming). The Kodak/WBCA All-America Basketball Team for NCAA Division I will be announced at the Kodak/WBCA All-America Team Press Conference at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Center on March 31, 2007 at 9:45 a.m. (ET) in Cleveland, Ohio. |
