Coming Up... Saturday's game will complete the fourth of a six-year transition from junior college to Division-I for the women's basketball program. UV is currently on a two-game winning streak after defeating IPFW and NJIT last week in Orem. The Wolverines had control for most of the game but IPFW took a late lead before some clutch free throw shooting from Julie McMurray helped UV to the win. McMurray, who finished 12-for-15 from the line, had 20 points while Robyn Fairbanks finished with 18. On senior night against NJIT, Veva Ahlstrom wrapped up her home career with a seven point, three assist performance. Fairbanks notched her 10th "double-double" with 22 points and 10 rebounds. She is currently fourth nationally in scoring with a 23.5 ppg average. Fairbanks also leads all D-I independent players in scoring and field goal percentage, hitting 55% from the floor. The Wolverines defeated UTPA 75-54 on February 10th in Orem. In that game, Fairbanks finished with 27 while Sandy Marvin added 24. Wolverines Sweep D-I Independent Awards... It's the fifth time that Fairbanks has won the award this season while McMurray has earned the newcomer award three times in the last four weeks including two weeks in a row. "It's a great honor for both of these girls," said Utah Valley head coach Cathy Nixon. "Robyn has been such a force offensively all year and Julie has really stepped up her game and is making a big difference for us. I'm proud of them." Fairbanks averaged 20 points and 9.5 rebounds hitting 60.7 percent (17-for-28) from the field as Utah Valley went 2-0 last week. She also totalled five assists, four steals and three blocks. Against NJIT, Fairbanks recorded her 10th "double-double" of the season with 22 points (on 10-for-15 shooting) and 10 boards in 23 minutes of action. Fairbanks leads all independents in scoring with a 23.5 ppg average, which also ranks her fourth nationally. She's also first among independents in field goal percentage, hitting 55.6% from the field. McMurray averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds, shooting 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the floor and 2-for-4 from the three-point line. In a three-point win over IPFW, McMurray had 20 points and seven rebounds and followed that with 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists against NJIT. The two Canadians, who both hail from Alberta, have won the respective awards more than any other D-I Independent player this season. Utah Valley State to become Utah Valley University... On the season, LaKeisha Gray leads the team with a 10.8 ppg average with Tamara Vaughn right behind her at 10.0 points per contest. Mahogony Daniel leads UTPW in rebounding, averaging 6.7 per game to go along with 6.8 points. Utah Valley holds a 2-1 series lead all-time with the home team winning all three contests. |
