Edinburg, Texas - Utah Valley women's basketball capped its most successful season at the NCAA level with a 60-53 win at Texas-Pan American on Saturday. The Wolverines finished the season with a 15-13 record, including a 5-5 mark in United Basketball League play.

"It feels great. It's an amazing accomplishment," said head coach Cathy Nixon of the team's first winning season since jumping to NCAA Division-I athletics. "I told them after the game that it's the biggest credit to them how they've worked hard and stayed focused all year."

Robyn Fairbanks recorded her 11th "double-double" of an impressive sophomore season with 29 points and 12 rebounds on 11-for-16 from the field.

"She's carried us all year long. It's not easy to do when every single game teams have focused so much on stopping her," said Nixon.

Rebekah Peterson had 12 points and six rebounds for the Wolverines, who hit 51% from the field for the game while holding the Lady Broncs (12-17) to 30% from the field.

Peterson kept the Wolverines afloat offensively early in the first half when neither team could buy a field goal. Peterson scored on a driving lay up and hit a three from the corner as part of a 13-5 run UV run.

Fairbanks scored on four straight field goals in the first half to help the Wolverines build a 27-19 lead at the break. Fairbanks hit 6-of-9 in the half for 12 points while Peterson scored nine points.

After scoring the final four points of the first half, Fairbanks, Sandy Marvin and Julie McMurray all hit three-pointers and Fairbanks hit a jumper to begin the second half scoring for Utah Valley, stretching the run to 15-1 and building a 38-21 lead with just over 16 minutes left in the game.

The Lady Broncs didn't get their first field goal of the second half until Tiona Wilson hit a jumper with 13:46 left in the game, cutting the UV lead to 38-23.

McMurray hit another three and Fairbanks scored and was fouled to catapult the lead to 44-25.

The lead was still 19 at 49-30 when UTPA made a game of it though, using an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 49-40 with 3:40 on a three-point play from Robin Garrett.

But Fairbanks scored on the next possession for the Wolverines to stop the run, pushing the lead back to 11.

The Lady Broncs cut the lead to seven on two occasions, including a lay up at the final buzzer for the seven-point margin.

UTPA was led in scoring by Aleeya Grigsby's 14 points while MaHogony Daniel had six points and nine rebounds. The Lady Broncs won the rebounding battle 41-35 and had 21 offensive rebounds turn into 18 second chance points to not allow the game to get completely away from them.

Fairbanks finished the season with an average of 23.7 points and 9.1 rebounds, hitting 56% from the floor for the year. She will unofficially finish in the top three or four in scoring nationally while leading all Division-I Independents in scoring and field goal percentage. She also reached double figures in 27 of 28 games during the season.
