YPSILANTI, Mich. - Gehrhart Vuksinick, Ben Kjar and Jeff Newby each placed as Utah Valley wrestling started its 2007-08 wrestling campaign strong at the Eastern Michigan Open.

The competitive tournament featured five teams ranked in the top-20 including Michigan (No. 5), Northwestern (No. 6), Central Michigan (No. 10), Navy (No. 18) and Pittsburgh (No. 20).

"This was a good tournament with a lot of good wrestlers," UV head coach Greg Williams said. "We are a young team again this year. But, we are a better young team. We are further along at the beginning of this season than where we were at the end of last year."

Vuksinick placed fourth in the 165-pound weight division posting a 4-2 record at the tournament. Kjar finished with a 6-1 record and a fifth-place finish wrestling at 125. Newby had a sixth-place finish with a 5-2 record in the 141-pound weight class.

The tournament included 450 wrestlers, averaging 45 wrestlers per weight-class bracket. Utah Valley wrestled 13 at the tournament with 10 picking up victories.

Flint Ray (2-2) at 133, Sam Allen (4-2) at 149 and Mark Dennis (3-2) at 184 all picked up multiple wins at the tournament with Nate Gardner, Nate Kearsley, Marc Fenwick and Ramsey Nijem all picking up single victories on the day.

Utah Valley will continue its season next week when the Wolverines head to Laramie, Wyo. to compete in the Cowboy Open.
