UC Davis Topples Utah Valley in Non-Conference Wrestling Action
Feb. 10, 2007
Orem, Utah - A young Utah Valley State (6-11) wrestling team ran into a seasoned UC Davis (8-6) and suffered a 36-12 defeat on Saturday afternoon in Orem. Davis, who is at the top of the Pac-10 standings, won six of the seven matches that took place (three matches were decided by forfeit) with the only loss coming when Tyler Bernacchi suffered an injury and could not return late in the match. Bernacchi had a 10-3 lead with 53 seconds left in the match on Wolverine junior Brock Jardine but was forced to default the match when he ran out of injury time and couldn't return. "We knew coming in that they were a very solid team, they're very well coached," said UV head coach Greg Williams. "The good thing about a match like this is they tell us the difference of where we are and where we need to be. We're a young team and they're and experienced team and that shows." Utah Valley had its chances early in the match to take the lead. At 141 lbs., Justin Morrill gave up five points early but came back to narrow the gap between he and Shawn Brendle to 10-8 late in the match. But Brendle scored on a takedown and a near fall in the final 20 seconds to win 15-8 and put his squad up 3-0. Then at 149 lbs., Justin Rawle scored first on Shawn Haratani but gave up seven straight points and had to come from behind the rest of the way. Rawle closed the gap to three points on two separate occasions but a Haratani takedown with six seconds left put Davis up 6-0. Following a forfeit at 157 lbs. by Davis, giving senior Clayton Wolf the victory, Dustin Noack defeated UV freshman Dustin Olsen 16-4 before #4 ranked Ken Cook pinned Marc Fenwick with 1:53 remaining in the opening period to give the Aggies a 16-6 advantage. After Jardine got the win at 174 for UV to cut the deficit to 16-12, UC Davis got major decision wins at 197 and heavyweight before UV forfeits at 125 and 133 UV pushed the final score to 36-12. The Wolverines will wrap its 2006-07 schedule next Saturday against Western Wrestling Conference foe Air Force at 7pm in the Shurian Family Activity Center. Results |
