Wolverines Open Fall Schedule with America Sky Championships
Sept. 23, 2007
Orem, Utah - The Utah Valley men's golf team opens its fall 2007 schedule on Monday with the inaugural America Sky Championship. The championship will be played at the par-72 Valley View Golf Course in Layton, Utah and also alongside the Purple and Red Invitational, co-hosted by Weber State and Utah. 18 teams will compete at the Purple & Red, including each of the eight schools making up the new America Sky Men's Golf Conference. The conference includes Binghamton, Hartford, Idaho State, Northern Colorado, Weber State, Utah Valley, Sacramento State and Texas-Pan American. "The America Sky Conference is a great fit for us. It has great competition with the schools that are included and at the same time we think we can come in and be really competitive," said Director of Golf and men's head coach Clark Rustand. The new-look Wolverines lost star golfer Nic van Vuuren, who is now an assistant coach, to graduation but gained the 2007 Utah State Am Champion Nick Nelson. "We expect big things from him this year," said Rustand of Nelson. "The addition of our newcomers has been phenomenal. I can't wait to see what they can do this year. Our returners also worked really hard over the summer and are setting a good pace for the new players." Seniors Jeff Gibson and Jordan Rogers, juniors Andrew Smith and Adam Tayler and sophomore Skyler Distefano are the five returning players for Utah Valley. Rustand is entering his first full season as Utah Valley's director of golf and men's head coach after taking over mid-way through the 2006-07 season. "I am very excited to start my first full season. We have set our expectations for this season high and feel that the talent level of our team is phenomenal," said Rustand. |
