LEHI, Utah - Nick Nelson, who recently signed a national letter of intent to play golf for Utah Valley, won the Utah State Amateur at Thanksgiving Point Sunday, defeating Scott Clark 1-up in the 36-hole final round.

"It is huge to have an incoming recruit win the state championship before he has competed for the school," UV head golf coach Clark Rustand said. "It has already built a lot of team camaraderie. Three of his teammates were at the course to support him Sunday."

Nic van Vuuren, a former UV standout who just completed his senior season with the Wolverines was eliminated in the quarterfinals when he was edged by Robbie Fillmore, 1-up on Saturday.

Nelson won the Utah State Amateur in the first year he entered the prestigious tournament. Nelson edged Rick Lloyd and Zach Bachman, 1-up, in the first round and second rounds. After beating Brady Stanger, 1-up in the quarterfinals, Nelson needed an extra hole to defeat Chris Gresh in the semifinals.

"I made a lot of putts in the tournament and have recently made some swing changes that helped me out," Nelson said.

Nelson played high school golf at Lone Peak High School and competed two years at Odessa Junior College in Texas. He was planning to attend BYU-Hawaii next year, but Rustand saw him play at the recent Provo Open and offered him a scholarship which he immediately accepted.

"It's great to win a tournament like this heading into our fall season," Rustand said.
