Oct. 24, 2006
San Jose, California - Utah Valley State shot a team score of +16 (304) in Tuesday's final round of the Santa Clara Invitational and finished 12th place overall at Silver Creek Country Club in San Jose, California. Dustin Robinson shot a 75 in the final round to finish +8 (t-34) to lead the Wolverines. It's the highest tournament finish Robinson, a junior from Nephi, Utah, has had in his career. Nic van Vuuren shot a 78 in the final round to finish two strokes behind Robinson and tied for 44th. It's the first tournament that someone other than van Vuuren has led the Wolverines in a tournament since April 23, 2005. "I've been very happy with the improvement that Dustin has made since he's been here," said Wolverine coach Tommy Johnson. "I was hoping that after the second round we'd be stronger than we were today, but it's a learning experience and we just hope to carry that into next week's tournament." Andrew Smith (+11, t-46th), Jeff Gibson (+12, t-52nd) and Jordan Rogers (+22, t-80th) round out Utah Valley's scores. The Wolverines finished with a final score of +37, one stroke behind Sacramento State. UC Santa Barbara won the team tournament after shooting an impressive 9-under in the final round, topping UCLA by two strokes. Gonzaga's Brandon Crick shot a 69 to finish -5 and edge Jason Kang of UCLA by one stroke. The Wolverines will be back in action this coming Sunday through Tuesday at the Bill Cullum Invitational (Wood Ranch GC) in Simi Valley, California. |
