Golfers Finish 2nd at D-I Independent Championship

WINDSOR, Colorado - Utah Valley tallied a final round 293 on Sunday to finish in second place, 11 shots behind Sacramento State, at the Division-I Independent Championship at Pelican Lakes CC in Windsor, Colorado. Seniors Nic van Vuuren and Chris Cole competed in their final tournament as Wolverines. van Vuuren finished in third place after shooting 1-under (71) for a final score of -4. He was six shots behind North Dakota State's Eric Johnson, who shot back-to-back scores of 67 on the final two days to finish -10 for the tournament. van Vuuren ends his career with several top-10 finishes, including four second place finishes and a win at last year's independent championship. Cole shot a final round 73 (+1) to tie Dustin Robinson for the second best score of the day for UV. Cole finished the tournament +10 overall, tied for 29th while Robinson was +8 and tied for 24th. Jeff Gibson, who opened the tournament with a 69 on Friday, shot a final round 76 and finished +4 overall, second best for UV, and tied for 13th. Andrew Smith also shot a 76 and ended the tournament with a score of +7, tied for 20th. Adam Tayler also competed in the tournament but was not one of the five Wolverines competing for a team score. He shot +7 (79) on Sunday and finished tied for 41st with an overall score of +15. |
