Runners to Finish at Independent Championships

Oct. 26, 2007

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley will look to cap arguably its best season ever with a strong performance at the Independent Championships as the Wolverines head to Texas this weekend.

The races will take place at the Monte Cristo Golf Course in Edinburg, Texas on Saturday. The men will begin the 8,000 meters at 8:30 a.m. and the women will start the 6,000 meters at 9:15 a.m.

"We are feeling pretty confident headed into this meet," UV head coach Scott Houle said. "If the kids run the way they have been this whole season, we should be in the top two."

The Wolverines are coming off a strong meet two weeks ago at Southern Utah when UV's men and women won their respective team competitions. The Wolverines Ayisha Mitchell finished first in the women's race.

In the past, UV has fallen short of its goals of a first or second place team finish in the Independent Championships.

"Finally we have experience this year," Houle said.

Mitchell along with Chase Englestead are among the favorites to finish among the head of the pack in their races.

Conditions are expected to be somewhat challenging as it is expected that there will be 60-70 percent humidity. Mild temperatures and no winds are expected.
