Women Finish Fourth; Men Fifth

Fort Wayne, IN- The Utah Valley State men's and women's cross country team concluded their season on Saturday at the Independent Championships. The women finished fourth and the men finished fifth in the nine-team race held at IPFW. The race was run on an extremely muddy field after two days of heavy rainfall. In the women's 6K race the top four teams were separated by only 11 points. South Dakota State was first with 55 points while IPFW was second with 58 points. UC Davis had 64 points while the Wolverines had 66. Freshman Mary Nothum was the top Wolverine finisher at fifth place by running a 22:34.2. Senior Bekah Poppinga was seventh 22:39.4. Both runners earned All-Independent honors for finishing in the top 10. "Mary and Bekah ran really well," Houle said. Karinne Bentley, Kirsten Barney and Ashley Evans all finished in the top 20. Chase Englestead was the top male runner, finishing 11th in the 8K race running a 26:27.1. Danny Moody was the next Wolverine runner to cross the finish line, finishing 21st. Utah Valley ran without its No. 1 runner Joe Bendoski. "All the boys ran really well and close together," Houle said. UC Davis won the men's race while North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Texas-Pan American rounded out the top four places. |
