Cedar City, UT- The Utah Valley State women's cross country team won its second straight meet on Saturday when they won the SUU Color Country Invitational, beating Idaho State, Southern Utah, Westminster and Dixie State. Eight Wolverine runners finished the competition in the top 15.

"To have over half the field our runners in the top 15 is a great achievement and shows our girls are running as a team," associate head coach Kirke Adamson said.

Freshman Mary Nothum finished second in the 2.75 mile race with a time of 17:24.36 while Wolverine sophomore Karinne Bentley was third at 17:35.28. Bekah Poppinga finished fifth at 17:49.24 while Kirsten Barney was seventh at 18:06.99 and Kim Rowberry was 10th at 18:23.32.

"It was nice to see Kim Rowberry step up," Adamson said. "She is hitting her stride as we gear up as team for the Independent Nationals." Ashley Evans, Kim Scott and Monique Torres rounded out the top 15.

The guys also had success as Joe Bendoski won the 4.5 mile event with a time of 23:48.77. His teammate Chase Englestead finished second with a mark of 23:53.06.

"The boys ran a steady race," Adamson said. "At the 1.75 mile mark Joe made his move up a big hill. He ran a strong race. Chase had an incredible finish to move from fifth to second."

As a team the men finished second to SUU. Idaho State finished third while Westminster and Dixie State rounded out the team competition.

The Wolverines have two weeks off before they compete at the Independent championships on Oct. 28 in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

"We are right were we need to be heading into the Independent championships for both the men and women," Adamson said.
