St. Paul, MN- The Utah Valley State women's cross team finished 15th at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota on Saturday. Thirty-one teams competed in the women's race. The Wolverine women finished a head of teams like Iowa State, Arizona, Kansas State, Kansas, Xavier and Air Force. In the 6K race, freshman Mary Nothum had a time of 22:49 and was the first Utah Valley runner to cross the finish line. She finished 62nd out of 288 runners. "For a freshman to do that in a meet like this shows the potential she has," Utah Valley State coach Scott Houle said. "She doesn't wilt in the face of tough competition." Bekah Poppinga was the second Wolverine to finish at 22:57, good for 68th place. Karinne Bentley ran a 23:13 while Kirsten Barney finished the race at 23:47. On the men's side, they competed at the same meet and finished 29th out of 34 teams. Joe Bendoski was the top Wolverine runner in the 8K race, running a 26:25. Sophomore Chase Englestead was right on his heals with a time of 26:31. Jake Buhler ran a 27:18 and Danny Moody was the fourth Wolverine to finish at 27:57. "The guys struggled a little bit," Houle said. "Ten of the top 25 teams in America were at this and I don't know if they were ready for that type of race." The Wolverines compete next Friday at the University of Utah. |
