Pentathalon, Field Events Start UV Track Season

Day One Results

PROVO, Utah - The Utah Valley indoor track season got underway as several Wolverine athletes participated in the first day of the two-day 2008 BYU Cougar Indoor Invitational.

The first day featured the women's pentathalon, part of the men's heptathalon along with several field events. Tomorrow's second day will feature the conclusion of the men's heptathalon, the conclusion of the field events and will feature the track events.

Richie Stapler had a stong first meet for the Wolverines in the long jump. The freshman from Centerville, Utah, took second in the men's long jump with a leap of 6.72 meters.

Freshmen women Brooke Bunderson and Erica Shields also began their collegiate careers competing in the pentathalon. Shields and Bunderson got off to a good start in the pentathalon, finishing second and third place, respectively in the 60 meter hurdles. Shields ended up finishing fifth in the pentathalon while Bunderson finished sixth.

Returner Tiera Zaugg led several UV long jumpers as she finished third in the women's long jump with a mark of 5.38 meters. Ashley Timo, Jami Daniels, Shantay Hall and Mandi Barnes all finished in the top-10 in the same event.

The Wolverines will continue in action at the same track meet tomorrow starting at 10 a.m.
