Miners Swept on Senior Day

New Mexico State claimed both ends of Wednesday’s doubleheader against the UTEP Miners by winning game one, 5-2, and completed the season-series sweep with a 7-1 victory in the final home game of UTEP’s inaugural season.

The Aggies capitalized on five UTEP errors in game one and scored four unearned runs to help build a 5-0 lead heading into the last frame of play.

Lindsey Pridgen singled down the left-field line to lead off the inning and would later score as Denise Emmons reached on an error by the NMSU shortstop. Laura Joiner’s single to center would drive in Jawauna Davis who also reached via an Aggie error. The runs would cut the Aggie lead to three at 5-2, but Jennifer Garcia would pop out to second, ending the game.

NMSU used the long ball to take control of game two as it recorded its first round tripper since March 15 in the third. Twelve batters later NMSU took a 5-0 lead with a three run blast to left.

The Miners would scrap together a run in the bottom half of the fifth when Joiner singled home Emmons. But the run would be the only one of the game for the Miners who left five runners on base and managed just four hits.

UTEP will have the weekend off as it prepared for its final road trip of the season May 13-15. Thursday the Miners are scheduled to face Louisiana Tech in Ruston, La., before wrapping up play in the school’s first season of softball in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday.
