Fresno State Gets Past UTEP

Fresno State’s Christina Clark and Jamie Southern each hit a pair of homeruns Saturday afternoon as the Bulldogs completed a season-series sweep over the Miners by taking game one of the day’s doubleheader 4-2 and game two 11-5 at Tejanas Field in El Paso, Texas.

The day’s two games were complete opposites as game one would prove to be a pitcher’s duel, while the nightcap turned into a slugfest.

Clark would lead the day off with a monster shot to left-center which cleared the scoreboard. But UTEP starter Renee DiPuccio would settle down, allowing just three more runs on seven total hits.

Fresno (44-15, 17-1 WAC) would tack on a solo run in the third and one in the fourth before the Miners ended the shutout in the bottom of the sixth.

After back-to-back walks to lead off the inning, Sierra Hannum’s bid for extra bases was snubbed as the Bulldog leftfielder made a diving attempt down the line. Holly Cohen, holding up at second, would be gunned down at third for the first out of the inning. Lindsey Pridgen advanced Jennifer Garcia to third and Hannum to second with a groundout to short setting up Megan Whiteaker. Whiteaker notched a two-out two-RBI single to right-center, cutting the Fresno lead to 3-2. But that would be as close as the Miners would get as the Bulldogs added a run in the seventh.

UTEP (8-42; 1-19 WAC) would get on the board first in game two as Kristin Hardy scored on a Gracie Borjas single which was misplayed by the Fresno State right fielder allowing the ball to roll to the wall.

The Bulldogs would take its first lead of the game in the third as Southern hit a two-run homer after an RBI triple by Clark.

The Miners would answer with a three-run homer by Jawauna Davis in the bottom of the inning.

But the Fresno fourth would see the Bulldogs get a grand slam from Clark, which was followed by Southern’s second-consecutive four bagger setting the pace for a seven run inning.

Both squads would score a run in the fifth as Fresno moved its magic number for clinching the Western Athletic Conference crown to two games.

UTEP will wrap up the home portion of its schedule on May 5 with the New Mexico State Aggies at Tejanas Field.
