Miners Snap Skid, Down Nevada 5-1

The UTEP Miner softball team got a solid performance from all three areas of the game Thursday afternoon at Tejanas Field and ended it 27-game losing streak by downing the Nevada Wolf Pack, 5-1 in the second game of the day’s doubleheader.

Krisin Hardy got the Miners on the board in the bottom of the first with a two-run homer down the leftfield line. It is the first of the season for the UTEP shortstop. The Miners would tack on three runs to its lead in the third.

Jawauna Davis was hit with a pitch after Denise Emmons and Gracie Borjas drew back-to-back walks to lead off the inning. Hardy and Laura Joiner each singled and Jennifer Garcia grounded out to second as UTEP built a 5-0 lead.

Malia Simmons went the distance, tossing a three-hit gem and got a solid defensive effort behind her as her outfielders made several diving stabs throughout the contest in earning her first win on the season.

The win is the first-ever in Western Athletic Conference play for the Miners who dropped game one, 5-0.

Nevada did the most of its damage in the third inning of the game scoring four runs on five hits.

Sierra Hannun’s one-out single in the sixth broke up the Wolf Pack’s no-hit bid. UTEP would go on to record three hits in the game.

The Miners return to action on Saturday when it takes on Fresno State in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader at Tejanas Field.
