Spartans Hold Off Miners' Late Rally
The UTEP softball team scored three times in the bottom of the seventh but would come up one run short, falling to San Jose State in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 5-4. The Spartans swept the season-series with a 3-1 win in game one.
In the three-run seventh the Miners pounded out three of its seven hits in the game, including Jawauna Davis’ third homerun of the season, a two-run blast to right. Davis would go 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of singles in the first and fifth. Leading, 2-1, entering the sixth inning, SJSU scored twice in the inning and once in the seventh, securing its 13th win of the season and evened its Western Athletic Conference record at 6-6. The first game of the day would see UTEP manage just three hits, while scoring one unearned run. San Jose State got a leadoff homer from Danielle Eakins in the top of the third after the Miners knotted the game up at 1-all in the second. Davis recorded four hits on the day to lead the Miners, while Laura Joiner had two. UTEP will be back in action April 29 when it takes on Nevada in a conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. |
