Bulldogs Blank Miners in Doubleheader

Fresno State’s Jamie Southern tossed a complete-game shutout in game one and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs and earned a save in the second game as the Bulldogs downed the Miners, 3-0 and 4-0, in Thursday’s Western Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bulldog Diamond in Fresno, Calif.

Christina Clark went 2-for-3 and scored twice to help the Bulldogs down UTEP in the first game of Thursday’s doubleheader. Clark would score the only run Fresno State would need in the bottom of the first after leading off with a double. Clark later stole third and advanced home on a Denise Emmons error.

UTEP managed just two hits off Bulldog starter Southern, an infield single by Gracie Borjas in the third and a single to right by Megan Whiteaker in the sixth. Southern would strike out 10 Miners in the game without allowing a walk.

Renee DiPuccio tossed five innings for UTEP, allowing five hits and three runs one earned before giving way to Malia Simmons in the sixth.

The Bulldogs would add a run in the second and one in the fifth to complete the game’s scoring.

Southern doubled in the first inning of the second game scoring Clark who singled to lead off the inning and notched a two run double in the second, giving the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead.

The Miners would stage a rally in the sixth. Emmons notched her second hit of the game with two outs before Holly Cohen would enter the game as a pinch runner. Jennifer Garcia would follow with a single to right and Cohen stole third, giving UTEP runners on the corners with two outs. Fresno would bring in Southern who Lindsey Pridgen to strikeout swinging, ending the inning.

The Bulldogs final run of the day would cross home in the fifth as Rachael Donaldson singled up the middle to score Lori Hoffman who had singled to left.

Emmons would end the game with two hits to lead the Miner attack Pridgen and Garcia would each record a hit to account for all four of UTEP’s hits in the game.

UTEP will be back in action on Saturday as it takes on the Nevada Wolf Pack in Reno, Nev. Game one is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch, with game two to follow approximately 30 minutes after game one.
