Wild Day Ends in Darkness for UTEP
UTEP and Louisiana Tech waited out rain delays of 30 and 85 minutes before having game two of Saturday’s doubleheader called in the fifth inning because of darkness at Thunderbird Stadium. Tech rallied back from 6-0 to claim game one, 12-6, and held off a late UTEP rally for the sweep, 8-4, in the nightcap.
UTEP (7-33, 0-10 WAC) would swing a hot stick in game one scoring five runs in the first frame. Denise Emmons, Jennifer Garcia and Laura Joiner recorded three consecutive singles and would later score as Sierra Hannum, Megan Whiteaker and Gracie Borjas notched back-to-back-to-back singles as the Miners sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning. Jawauna Davis would bump the lead up to six with her first homerun of the season, a solo blast to right in the second. The Lady Techsters (17-22, 5-5 WAC) would begin its comeback in the third as Mary Cohn scored to cut the lead to 6-1. In the fourth Tech would cut the lead down even more with a three-run homer by Erin Chernicky. Despite a 30-minute rain delay in the fifth, La. Tech managed to tie the game up at 6-all. After a second rain-delay Tech managed to produce a six-run sixth inning. In the inning Tech would record five hits and draw a pair of walks in sending 11 batters to the plate. With darkness setting in, Game two stated at 5:45. La. Tech scored one in the first with the Miners answering with two in the home-half of the inning. Tech would tie the game up at 2-2 in the second before plating six runs in the fourth. Daivs would record her second round-tripper of the day in the Miners half of the fourth cutting the Lady Techster’s lead down to 8-3. In the fifth, Davis’ third hit of the day would plate Garcia but both Davis and Emmons would be stranded in the inning which was called due to darkness. Davis paced the UTEP offense which pounded out 17 hits on the day with four RBIs. Kristin Hardy and Emmons and Hannum joined Daivs with a team-high three hits. The Miners have dropped its last 20 games as it heads back on the road for a Thursday doubleheader with Fresno State and a Saturday twinbill in Reno. |
