Miners Fall to Hawaii, 4-2, 5-0
Laura Joiner went 4-for-6 in Saturday’s doubleheader against Hawaii but it would not be enough to lift the Miners past the Rainbow Wahine as the Bows swept the season series four-games-to-none with a pair of wins today at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Hawaii (22-19; 4-0 WAC) would get a run in the first, one in the second inning and break game two of the day open with three in the third capped off by Ashley Ruff’s two-run homer to left center as Hawaii claimed a 5-0 victory. UTEP (7-29; 0-6 WAC) was kept off balance by Ashley Tabion who allowed just one hit through the first five innings, but the Miners looked to have a big inning in the works in the top of the sixth. With one out, Joiner recorded her second single of the game and was followed by Denise Emmons who also singled. An out later, Sierra Hannum’s infield single would give UTEP bases loaded and Lindsey Pridgen at the plate. Pridgen’s apparent single to right field was too shallow allowing Tracie Uchima to throw to first for the force out, preserving the shutout. The Miners snapped a 23.2 inning scoreless streak in the top of the second of game one as Denise Emmons doubled to the left-centerfield gap, scoring Joiner. Joiner reached base as Noelle Izuma dropped the putout attempt at first on Joiner’s bunt. Hawaii would knot the game up at 1-all in the bottom of the inning after getting a lead-off single from Kea Yamaguchi. Amanda Garza would follow with a walk and Justina Kahaku would reach via fielder’s choice as Yamaguchi was erased at third. Uchima would advance Garza to third on a fielder’s choice as Kahaku was forced out at second. During the next at-bat, Emmons threw down to second attempting to catch a stealing Uchima. On the throw Garza broke for home and Hardy’s throw back to the plate would prove too high for Emmons as Garza crossed the plate. Renee DiPuccio would get the next batter to ground out to third, ending the inning. The Rainbow Wahine would take the lead for good in the fourth as it scored three runs on two hits. A lead-off single was erased as Tyleen Tausaga reached via fielder’s choice. After an April Crowell walk, Ashley Ruff would clear the bases with a triple to right center. Ruff would later score as Yamaguchi grounded out to short. The top of the fifth would see the Miners cut into the Bows lead to two at 4-2. Emmons would drive in her second run of the game with a sharply hit ball down the left-field line, scoring Pridgen who notched a one-out single. Joiner gave UTEP three-consecutive hits with a single up the middle. UTEP out hit Hawaii, 7-4, and was paced by the trio of Pridgen, Joiner and Emmons who each recorded two hits in the game. |
