Hawaii Sweeps Doubleheader
Shannon Tabion retired 15 of 16 batters and didn’t allow a hit in the nightcap of UTEP’s doubleheader with the University of Hawaii at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium as the Rainbow Wahine took both games, 6-0 and 10-0 Friday night.
Hawaii (20-19; 2-0 WAC) would get a three-run homerun from Denise Dahlberg and a two-run shot to left-centerfield from Ashley Ruff as it built a 5-0 lead heading into the second inning. The Rainbow Wahine would tack on another run in the third and three in the fourth, capped off by its third homerun of the game, to complete the mercy-rule game. UTEP (7-27; 0-4 WAC) would avoid the perfect game in the fourth as Laura Joiner hit a comebacker to the mound which Tabion threw into right field. In the first game of the day, Hawaii opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as April Crowell took a Renee DiPuccio offering over the fence in center field. The three-RBI hit scored Tracie Uchima and Tyleen Tausaga, both reached on walks. The Rainbow Wahine would tack on three more runs in the second as Noelle Izuma drew a bases loaded walk, Dahlberg drove home Justina Kahaku on a sacrifice fly to center, while the final run of the game would cross the plate from third as Denise Emmons attempted to gun down Izuma who stole second. DiPuccio would settle down after the second, allowing just three baserunners. The Miners would record just two hits off Melissa Coogan, both in the third inning. Lindsey Pridgen would lead off the inning with a single to right-center field and Joiner would single to center. But Coogan would retire 13 of the final 14 UTEP batters for the complete-game shutout. The two teams will wrap the series in a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. with game two to follow 20 minutes following the conclusion of game 1. |
