Miners Fall in Final At-Bat, 1-0
Christie Barlow hit a one-out double to left center in the bottom of the seventh to score Allison Murphy from second as Gardner-Webb eliminated UTEP from the Lady Vol Classic Saturday night at Tyson Park, 1-0.
Freshman Renee DiPuccio entered the game in the fourth inning in relief of Veronica Flournoy having already thrown 22.1 innings over the first four games. The Las Vegas, Nev., started to show signs of wearing down during the fifth, but after walking back-to-back batters, DiPuccio would settle down and get the next two batters to pop out, preserving the scoreless game. Gardner-Webb (22-29-1; 6-2 Atlantic Sun) would get the first two runners on base in the sixth but a pair of infield-flies and a fly out to left the game scoreless entering the seventh. With one out in the top of the inning, Megan Whiteaker reached on the first Bulldog error of the game. Laura Joiner bounced to the pitcher who erased Whiteaker at second. Kristin Hardy extended the inning with the fifth UTEP hit of the game bringing up Jennifer Garcia who already had two hits in the game. But Garcia would foul out to the catcher for the third out. After combining to leave 18 runners on base in the first meeting of the day, the two teams stranded a combined total of 22 runners nine for UTEP, 13 for Gardner-Webb. For the tournament, Garcia led all Miners with a .267 average (4-for-15), while DiPuccio tossed 25.2 of 31.2 total innings. The Miners will return to Western Athletic Conference play next weekend as it travels to Honolulu, Hawaii for four games. |
