Bulldogs Bite Miners, 5-1
Gardner-Webb scored three in the first and two in the fourth as it downed the Miners, 5-1, in the final game of pool play at the Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., Saturday at Tyson Park.
After falling behind, 3-0, in the top of the first, UTEP (7-24; 0-2 WAC) got a RBI double to leftfield from Jennifer Garcia in the third scoring Laura Joiner who reached on a fielder’s choice. Gardner-Webb (21-18-1; 6-2 Atlantic Sun) would bump the lead back up to three in the fourth as Jenny Wallace led off the inning with a walk and Lani Shaffer followed with a single. Rachael Riopel drove home both Wallace and Shaffer with a single down the leftfield line. GWU would leave the bases full for the second time in the game when Jess Wilke grounded out to third. UTEP would squander its best chance in the second inning as Sierra Hannum delivered a two-out single followed by a Lindsey Pridgen walk and Kristin Hardy singled to second. But the Miners would not be able to get any runners home as Karen Sjostrom went down swinging. The two teams would combine to leave 18 runners on base, including the bases loaded four times. With the win the Bulldogs will be the No. 4 seed in the 5:00 p.m. game, while UTEP will be the #5 seed. The winner will move on to face No. 12 Tennessee at Noon on Sunday. |
