Platzs Overtime Goal Caps Amazing 3-2 Comeback Win At Texas In NCAA First Round
AUSTIN, Texas Leslie Platz’s goal 4:37 into overtime capped an amazing comeback as UTEP stunned Texas, 3-2, in the first round of the NCAA Championship at Myers Stadium Friday night.
Playing in its first NCAA Tournament in school history, UTEP advanced to Sunday’s second round where it will face sixth-ranked California at 2 p.m. Central time. Cal defeated Rice, 2-0, in the first game of the Austin sub-regional. Kia Sams found herself alone streaking down the right flank and after collecting the ball, sent a cross that bounced past the goal box. Platz took two steps and sent a left-footed shot into the near side for the golden goal. It was her second of the season and her first career game-winning goal. With Texas ahead 2-0 following goals in the 30th and 51st minutes, UTEP got a pair of scores from Jami Tullius late in the contest. At the 80:09 mark, Sams sent a cross into the box that Tullius, who had her back to the goal, headed home for the Miners’ first goal. For Sams, an Austin native, it was her tenth assist of the year. Tullius had two more solid scoring chances in the next five minutes both from the 18-yard line. She sent a line drive in the 84th minute that sailed just high and another hard attempt a minute later that Dianna Pfenninger had to move quickly to save. Then with what appeared to be 85 seconds remaining in the Miners’ season, Cara Nordin dribbled through the Texas defense and fed a short pass to Tullius, who shot it in the right half of the goal. It was her team-leading 17th of the year. That was the way it stood for the final minute-and-a-half of regulation. UTEP improves to 4-0-1 in overtime games this season and ties the Conference USA single-season record with its 20th win. Both Brittany Popoff of UTEP and Pfenninger of Texas finished with six stops apiece. Texas got the first goal of the game in the 30th minute. Kelsey Carpenter crossed a ball to Amy Burlingham whose shot was partially stopped by Popoff but the deflection squirted over the end line before the Miners could clear the ball. Texas took a 17-6 edge in shots into the locker room thanks in large part to the open spaces created by the speed of Carpenter on the right side. The sophomore saw her first playing time in a couple of weeks after injuring her right ankle. Texas had six corner kicks in the half but wasn’t able to convert as UTEP put all 11 players in the box to thwart any chances. Ashley Foster made it 2-0 Texas five minutes into the second half on a cross from Burlingham. Burlingham took a long pass down the right side and sent a right foot in front of the goal where Foster one-timed it for the score. |
