After scoring twice in UTEP’s 4-0 win against Marshall, freshman Tameka Sumter has been named to Top Drawer Soccer’s (TDS) National Team of the Week.
It marks the fourth straight week that a Miner has been recognized by a national publication. Sumter becomes the fourth different Orange and Blue player on the campaign to garner notice by a national organization. Overall, it serves as the school-record eighth time this season that a player from the Sun City has been so honored.
Prior to the 2006 campaign, UTEP had placed players on national teams of the week six times, placing the accomplishments of this year’s edition of the Miners in rarified air. Additionally, there are more than 5,000 players who compete at the division I level each week, making Sumter’s achievement that much more notable.
The San Antonio, Texas, product provided the first of her two tallies against the Thundering Herd just 10 minutes into the match. With the Miners already leading, 1-0, Sumter delivered the knockout punch. After receiving a pass from Jami Tullius, Sumter drilled a shot screaming toward the net that blistered past the diving MU netminder and into the left corner of the goal.
At the 62-minute mark, Sumter put the match away for good. Conference USA assist leader Anoop Josan was the instigator, playing a beautiful, lofting ball high into the box off a corner kick.
Sumter leapt high above the pack, heading it into upper 90’s country for her team-leading 13th goal of the season.
The Miners will be back in action when they play Colorado College in the first round of the C-USA Tournament on Wednesday. The match is slated to start at 1:30 p.m.
