Tullius Trophy Case Gets More Crowded
UTEP sophomore soccer star Jami Tullius may need to find a larger place to keep her athletic awards.
After a solid freshman campaign at UTEP in 2004, the El Paso native increased her offensive firepower in 2005 by setting school class records for points, goals and game-winning goals. She was honored by a pair of associations in the last few weeks with some very impressive awards. Soccer Buzz named her to its All-Central Region third team following her 38 points, 17 goals and five game winners. She became the fourth player in school history to be honored at season’s end by the national internet magazine. She was the recipient of the Ray Sanchez Award which is presented by the El Paso Sunturians in conjunction with Newschannel 9 to honor El Paso’s “Collegiate Athlete of the Year.” The awards ceremony was taped in early January and aired on channel 9 last Saturday. Previous winners have included Holly Cohen in women’s soccer in 2002, Chris Baryla in men’s golf in 2003 and Robert Rodriguez in football in 2004. Tullius also became part of a unique group to win an award as both a prep and collegiate athlete. In 2002, she and her sister Toni were named Jesse Sosa Award winners for Sportsmanship in Basketball while at Eastwood High School. |
