Two Miner Wideouts Sign NFL Free Agent Contracts

UTEP receivers Jayson Boyd and Chris Francies agreed to NFL free agent contracts on Sunday night.

Boyd signed a three-year deal with Oakland, and Francies inked a two-year deal with Green Bay.

Both contracts are contingent on the players making the team. Boyd and Francies will leave on Thursday for minicamp.

A native of Riverside, Calif., Boyd finished his collegiate career at UTEP in 2004 and 2005 after playing for Oregon State in 2002. He had 42 catches for 560 yards and five touchdowns in 2004 before missing half of the 2005 campaign with groin and foot injuries. The 6-4, 210-pound Boyd finished 2005 with 12 receptions for 222 yards, with 126 of those yards coming at Memphis on Oct. 1. Boyd established personal bests for catches (seven) and yardage (140) versus Colorado in the 2004 EV1.net Houston Bowl.

Boyd will join UTEP teammate Thomas Howard in Oakland. Howard, a linebacker, was chosen in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Raiders on Saturday.

A Houston native, Francies concluded his career ranked sixth in UTEP history in receptions (128) and receiving yardage (2,022), and ninth in touchdown catches (12). He earned third team All-Conference USA honors in 2005, recording 44 catches for 774 yards and five TDs. He ended his Miner career by making a catch in 43 consecutive games. The 6-1, 200-pound Francies was named UTEP's 2005 offensive MVP. He had four games with over 100 yards receiving this past season, including in three consecutive outings versus Memphis, Rice and Tulsa.
