Redskins Pick Palmer in Sixth Round of NFL Draft

Jordan Palmer, UTEP's all-time leading passer, became a Washington Redskin on Sunday when he was chosen in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.

Palmer was the 31st selection of round six and the 205th overall pick. UTEP teammate Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr., the Miners' all-time receiving leader, was selected by Oakland in the third round of the draft on Saturday.

UTEP has had multiple NFL Draft selections for the first time since 2000, when three Miners (Leif Larsen, Paul Smith, Brian Young) went to Buffalo, San Francisco and St. Louis, respectively.

Palmer holds all of UTEP's career passing and total offense records. He is first in passing attempts (1,427), completions (851), passing yards (11,084), passing touchdowns (88), passing efficiency (136.26), 300-yard passing games (16), total offense (11,041 yards), total offensive yards per game (240.0) and touchdowns responsible for (95).

A Mission Viejo, Calif. native, Palmer started 36 straight games at quarterback for UTEP from 2004-06. He ranks 13th in NCAA history in touchdown passes, 19th in passing yards and 23rd in total offense.

Palmer threw for 3,503 yards and 29 TDs as a junior, and 3,595 yards with 26 TDs as a senior. He ranked seventh nationally in total offense (292.4 ypg) and 18th in passing efficiency (149.60) in 2006, leading Conference USA in passing average (299.6 ypg) and total offense. He passed for a career-high 455 yards at UAB.

The last UTEP quarterback to be picked in the NFL Draft was Sammy Garza, an eighth round selection by the Seahawks in 1987.
