Guard Kelvin Davis (Waterbury, Conn.) has signed a national letter of intent to play basketball at UTEP, Miner head coach Doc Sadler announced on Wednesday.

"Kelvin has a chance to be a very good defensive player," said Sadler. "Offensively, I would liken him to Giovanni St. Amant. He's a very aggressive driver with a mid-range game."

"Kelvin is a terrific athlete who can score both inside and outside," said Wayne Simone, who coached Davis on the Connecticut Select AAU team. "I will be surprised if he doesn't contribute a bunch of minutes next year as a freshman. He's ready right now."

The 6-4, 195-pound Davis played for four years at Sacred Heart (Conn.) High School before attending Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina last year.

He earned All-State, All-Area and All-District honors for three years at Sacred Heart. He averaged 29 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as a senior and 26 points, eight rebounds and six assists as a junior.

He was a first team All-New England pick by Hoop Scoop in 2003, and second team in 2002. He was chosen to the All-Tournament team at the 2003 adidas Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas as a member of the Connecticut Select team.

Davis was named one of the top 70 players at the 2002 ABCD Camp in Hackensack, N.J.
