SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah women's basketball team (9-3 overall) came out of the gate to play crushing defense which vaulted it to the 71-45 victory over in-state rival Weber State here this evening.
The win races Utah's winning streak out to four games, and it drops WSU to 6-4 on the year.
The Utes forced the Wildcats to miss their first five shots, and Utah also had five blocks in the first 12 minutes. All of that led to a seven-point, 11-4 lead. The Wildcats finished with only six first-half field goals, and they shot a meager 21.4 percent (6-for-28) in the first 20 minutes.
The home team would never look back from that point as it took the commanding 34-16 lead into the break.
Morgan Warburton scored the first bucket of the second half, upping Utah's lead to 20 points, 36-16. The Utes' lead never dipped below 20 points the rest of the way as they cruised to the 26-point blowout.
Utah had a pair of double-figure scorers tonight as it shot an impressive 53.7 percent (29-for-54). Leilani Mitchell led all players with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting. The senior point guard was everywhere for Utah tonight as she finished with a game-high eight rebounds and seven assists. She added a steal for good measure.
Warburton was the other top offensive producer for Utah. She finished with 18 points, hitting 7-of-10 attempts. She also had seven rebounds and six helpers on the night.
The Utes limited Weber State to just 29.6 percent (16-for-54) shooting. They held the 43-24 edge under the glass, and out-blocked WSU, 7-3. Sara Tuomi finished with a team-best 16 points for Weber State. She was also its top rebounder with seven caroms.
