Gibson graduated from Indiana University in 1955 and obtained his Master's Degree from Indiana in 1958. He received his Doctorate from Brigham Young University in 1978.

He began his career in sports in New York as a high school teacher and track and cross country coach. In 1964 he became the Head track and cross country coach at Florida A&M and in 1966 he took a similar position at Grambling State. In 1967 he moved to Kentucky State University and in 1985 he became he head track and cross country coach at the University of Mississippi. His team won a national championship at Kentucky State and five of his athletes have been NCAA national champions. Since 1991, he has been an adjunct professor in physical education at Georgetown College in Georgetown, Kentucky.
