Mel Brodt has remained active as an international clinic speaker since retiring from Bowling Green State University. He is a former president of both the Division I Cross Country and Track & Field Coaches Associations. He has coached many championship teams, but he is best known for coaching Dave Wottle, the 1972 800-meter Olympic Champion. He is a member of the Ohio Track Coaches Hall of Fame and the Bowling Green Athletic Hall of Fame.
