Abilene Christian begins NCAA title defense ranked No. 1

Aug. 29, 2007

Led by the incomparable Nicodemus Naimadu, Abilene Christian's men enter the 2007 Division II cross country season ranked first in the country, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.

Naimadu won an unprecedented third straight NCAA Division II individual title last fall and will attempt to claim his fourth national championship in November. While winning national championships is commonplace for the senior from Narok, Kenya, Naimadu led Abilene Christian to its first NCAA team cross country title last fall.

The Wildcats scored 57 points to finish in front of runner-up Adams State (70) at the 2006 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships.

Adams State is ranked second in the 2007 preseason poll. The Grizzlies will be led this fall by Aaron Braun, the 2006 NCAA champion in the 1,500 meters.

Rounding out the top 10 behind Abilene Christian and Adams State are Western State, Grand Valley State, Chico State, Stonehill, Colorado Mines, Harding, Minnesota State and Wayne State.

The second 10 consists of Slippery Rock, Saginaw Valley, UMass-Lowell, Augustana, Metropolitan State, Edinboro, Missouri Southern State, Lock Haven, Northern Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

Rounding out the top 25 are Central Missouri, Western Washington, Southern Connecticut, Florida Southern and Alaska Anchorage.

Adams State is ranked first in the USTFCCCA Division II women's preseason poll. For complete rankings, see www.ustfccca.org.
