Freshman Erin Monson Earns WAC Tennis Player of the Week
April 11, 2007 LOGAN, Utah - Utah State's Erin Monson was named Western Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, it was announced Wednesday for the week of April 2-8. Monson was the third to win the honor for the season, previous recipients including Lauren Monson for the week of Jan. 25 and Brianna Harris for Feb. 2. Monson, a freshman from Salt Lake City, Utah (Skyline HS), shut down Idaho's Valerie Espinosa Saturday, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles as the Aggies recorded another win, 4-3, evening the spring record to 7-7. In doubles action, Monson teamed with her sister, Lauren, at No. 1 and topped UI's Patricia Ruman and Mariel Tinnirello, 9-7. On April 7, playing at No. 1, the sisters defeated San Jose State's Ashley Tavita and Amber Silverstone, 8-6. Erin Monson then went on to dominate Spartan Courtney Koenigsfeld, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles, helping USU record a win of 4-3. After winning her matches on Tuesday against Idaho State, Monson now holds a doubles record of 8-6 and 9-5 singles. The Aggies' next action will take place against Boise State in Boise Thurs., April 12 at 3 p.m. in Boise. |
