USU Tennis Splits The Day At The Big West Championship

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. - Utah State's men's tennis team captured victory today in the consolation bracket at the Big West Championship as they took the court against Idaho. The Aggies walked away with a decisive 5-0 victory, improving to 11-12 while the Vandals fell to 5-15. The Utah State women did not fare as well, falling to 12-13 with a 4-0 loss to Cal Poly. The men took the doubles point as they won matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots. Joao Pinho and Roshan Rasekhi defeated Terence Nugent and Uriah Jones 8-2 while Hannes Schenk and Brad Ferguson beat Robert Chalkley and Hector Mucharraz 8-4. The Aggies took the top two spots as well as No. 4 and No. 6 in singles play. Pinho picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Nugent at No.1 and Schenk defeated Mucharraz 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Ferguson took the No. 4 spot with a 6-2, 6-2 win and at the No. 6 position, Jonas Tyden was a 6-3, 6-0 winner. In women's action Cal Poly wasted no time in claiming the win. They took the doubles point winning 8-4 at the No. 1 spot, and 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. They then went on to claim victories in singles play at No. 2, 3 and 4, all in two sets. The Utah State men will square off against UC Riverside for fifth place at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, while the women will play for seventh place against Idaho at 5:00 p.m. today.
