USU Women's Tennis Loses Close Match To Hawaii

LOGAN, Utah--In a close match here Wednesday afternoon Utah State's women's tennis team fell 4-3 to Hawai'i. The Aggies are now 9-10 on the season. In singles action Aggie Jill Smith won the No. 2 spot after Sylvia Jaros from Hawaii retired in the first match because of a nagging wrist injury. Courtney Anderson scored for Utah State in the No. 4 spot after a close match up with Hawaii's Paige Mainor. Anderson finished Mainor off winning 7-6 (5), 6-1. Finally, in the No. 6 singles Lauren Monson won her match after playing Kana Aikawa in three sets. Monson sealed the match on the third set and finished with a score of 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. In doubles play Utah State's closest match came in the No. 1 spot while Lindsey Bennion and Carolyn Stephens played hard but were defeated by Hawaii's duo Lauren Fitzgerald and Mainor 8-6. The Aggies will begin play agian on Sunday when they take on Eastern Washington here at the Sports Acadamy at 12 p.m. HAWAII 4, UTAH STATE, 3 SINGLES: No. 1 Lauren Fitzgerald (UH) def.
